It’s been quite the journey!
In 2018, on the sudden departure of the previous tenants, The Stag was again closed. Charles Wells struggled to find replacement tenants and put it up for sale. The local community was horrified at the thought of losing their beloved pub and even more fearful that it might be sold for residential development. Therefore, a small group of locals decided that rather than risk this possibility, they would see if it was viable to purchase the pub as a community asset.
After protracted negotiations with the brewery, a price was agreed upon. Following a village meeting, enough money was raised to fund the purchase, pay for a complete refurbishment, and provide enough working capital to re-open and run the pub. Today the Stag is owned by forty-two local shareholders united in their desire to offer a great drinking and eating experience for locals and visitors alike.
The pub you see today has been completely refurbished, and the gardens have been re-landscaped. We are enormously proud of this accomplishment and thank the many contractors who have made this possible. We hope you like what you see and enjoy your time with us.
